Zhejiang’s Thriving Small Package Economy Fuels Business Growth

Recent reports from Xinhua highlight the significant impact of small packages on business in Zhejiang, as Jinhua, with an express delivery volume exceeding 13.6 billion last year, maintains its position as China’s largest city in terms of delivery volume for the fourth consecutive year, according to the State Post Bureau.

Zhu Lanjun, Party secretary of Yiwu’s market development committee, noted that Yiwu, housing the world’s largest small commodity wholesale market, has evolved into an e-commerce capital. In 2023, Yiwu recorded a remarkable 13.22 percent year-on-year increase, totaling 442.37 billion yuan ($61.93 billion) in e-commerce transactions. Cross-border e-commerce transactions contributed significantly, reaching 121.16 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 11.8 percent.

Yongkang, recognized as China’s hardware capital in the southeastern part of Jinhua, has actively embraced the e-commerce market, leading to continuous growth in express delivery business. In 2023, Yongkang’s express business volume reached 730 million pieces, marking a 5.8 percent year-on-year increase.

The General Administration of Customs reported a 19.6 percent surge in China’s cross-border e-commerce exports, reaching 1.83 trillion yuan in 2023. The internationalization of China’s express industry has played a crucial role in the rapid development of cross-border e-commerce.

China’s self-owned brand products witnessed a 9.3 percent increase in exports in 2023, contributing to a 1.7 percentage point rise in the share of total exports. From a market perspective, these products have successfully reached over 200 countries and regions globally.

The thriving small parcel economy reflects the dynamic momentum of China’s economy. With a robust supply chain and logistics system, Chinese products continue to infuse new vitality into the global consumer market.
